Parker Pen and I
My first encounter was with a pen of sentimental value about 15 years ago when my Managing Director of previous company presented it to me for contributing towards company progress. It was Sheaffer pen. That was the starting point of my life having to know how an excellence pen produces excellence results in writing. It’s an eye opener for myself as prior to this encounter my thoughts were that any pen was suffice for writing as expensive pen only reflects the status of a person.
My next collection of pen was from Parker Pen. It was sliver in colored. It’s Parker Urban…with the bullet-shape barrel and ultra-modern finishes that easily stands out among Parker Pen’s range of pens due its unique shape to defy the convention, synonymous with my character. This pen was brought for me as a way to appreciate myself. The reason I picked this pen was its ergonomics contour which fitted perfectly to my hand. It was sturdy in made. Besides that, the G-force of the pen is on lower side towards the nib of pen which makes it easy to use and without much force been applied when writing. From Physics standpoint the tangent force of MGsinX [where X is an acute angle, X<90deg, g="9.81N," m="Mass">of pen] on the writing pad is great enough and I don’t have to exert additional force to the Parker Urban for compensating my writing style. Being engineer by profession we’re trained to look into nitty-gritty facts that would contributed in “compounded efficiency” in making judgment and in this peculiar case the pen. This makes my ideas during writing flows smoothly and transforms it into “masterpiece” handwriting.
As an obscure poet, having a Parker pen and notepad by my side at anytime is important as ideas and inspirations been collectively captured so that it could be transformed into my poems. Few years back, I penned my famous trilogy poems within the space of six day apart of one poem to another. That means it took me a total of 18 days to complete my trilogy poems series with themed of “No Fear”, “The Foundation” and “The Day”. It’s a tough assignment by my standard but with passion, Parker pen and notepad I’ve managed the impossible.
Quoted Dutch psychologist Christof van Nimwegen saying “Paper, pen, pencil and books are the key to developing one’s creativity and maximizing one’s intelligence”. The Dutch researcher recently completed his PhD dissertation at University of Utrecht about the effects of software on the functioning of human brain and proved that paper and pen are mightier than PC(personal computer). On my personal account, my Parker Urban together with my creativity did prove his point to be pertinent.
With the frequency of coming out with new model of Parker Pens coupled with cost per pen ownership that is within the reach of middle income group, I realized that my small investment been paid off handsomely. It might be a frugal purchase but well spent in ringgit. Lower cost and elegance are the oxymoron as I would like to state it and both of the criteria seem to be found in Parker Pen marketing strategy. I’m glad that Parker Pen is made available to lower/middle income group unlike some of the established brand that only cater for high income group.
As the saying goes “A thousand mile journey begins with one small step” I soon realized that there’re more things that I could learn about a pen by visiting pen websites. One thing that I did pick up was that in marketplace, most pen producers produce their pen in three mainstream types namely fountain pen, ball point pen and roller ball pen. Every entity does have its own usage. For instance, ball point pen is in use for casual writing, roller ball is use for signing signature, and fountain is more for its vintage/classic appearance. There’re three types of refills that are available in the market: Fine, Medium and Bold. Most of outlets in Malaysia carried Medium range rather than Fine or Bold concerning play safe in terms of strategy for marketing. That’s my guess. The advantage about Parker Pen refills are that the ink constantly flows out smoothly and you don’t have to worry about ink been inconsistent due to blockage.
One year ago, on August 2007 Fine Writers Club(FWC) celebrated its one year old and I was presented with a special edition of UK Parker Roller Ball pen(under its 888 mystery gifts program) that has a England football team logo[The Three Lions] on the surface of the pen when I redeemed the e-coupon from FWC at Parker outlet in Parkson Seberang Prai, Penang. As I’m a fan of Liverpool FC the ownership of this pen made me proud as it displayed some of my favourite players like Steven Gerrard on it. I slip it on my shirt smartly to display it and use it for deals and transactions that require signature. This is awesome.
The crux in the matter of Parker Pen is the sense of elegance. The prestige image in it makes the owner feels proud as Parker Pen is a renowned brand worldwide for its range of pens.
After visiting www.parkerpen.com website, I realized that every Parker Pen comes with two year international warranty for defective workmanship or material from date of purchase. This is in fact value-for-money for a pen savvy persons like me.
